It's that time of year again, when Europeans flock in front of the
television set (or very pointedly avoids doing just that) and afpers
from the rest of the world wonder what's going on.

Yes, it's the Eurovision Song Contest again.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/eurovision/2006//

And this year, for the first time since I moved to England, I'll not do
my patriotic duty and vote for Sweden. I've done that for six years, as
a little token gesture of patriotism. Even when the song has been dire,
I've picked up the phone and voted for Sweden.

Because the participating countries are not allowed to vote for
themselves, my place in UK has allowed me to give a vote that in some
small way might help Sweden. Maybe I should explain that it's a long
time since it was only about the songs - a large part is about
patriotism and voting for your neighbours.

But this year I won't vote for Sweden. The song's not bad, if a bit
bland, and she does have a very good voice, an even though she hasn't
sung yet as I'm writing this, I expect she'll to a good job. She's got
over twenty years' worth of Eurovision experience, and has won it once.

But I'll betryay my country this year, and vote for our arch-nemesis (in
sports, at least) Finland. I just can't resist it.

I liked Finland. I'm not sure what was playing the guitar, but I've
never seen a lizard on drums before!
And I'm sure at one point they said "What we need is Vikings with power
and rage", which seems quite reasonable to me :-)

I really didn't like the one that kept going "We are the winners"
though!

I prefer more melodic singing voices, but after seeing
the video I *had* to watch the Grand Prix, and vote -
for the first time in my life - because that wasn't some
shallow pop.

Waitaminute, you actually voted for the _act_? Why, you, you
un-Eurovision spoilsport, you! I'll have you know that Terry Wogan will
be very disappointed in you.

No, and I don't think they will be.

I think Latvia deserves some points, just for having the guts to be

Assuming this wasn't done *entirely* on the basis of the
horror movie costumes, I recommend Mitch Benn as our entry
next year, as he can do a *much* better parody of hard rock

So I saw, to my amazement. Of course, the four people in this household
gave two votes to Finland, one to Russia and one to Sweden. But we all
voted for our favourite songs, not our favourite countries.

Given that we voted for those who won the first, second and fifth place,
we seem to be rather mainstream, which will take some getting used to.
:-/

Overall I have to say that there were a fair few good songs this year,
which makes it a rather unusual ESC. Or perhaps I've just become old
enough to like pap.

Hey, I remember that one! That was the 1984 winner, I seem to
remember, sung by the Herries. Our entry that year was Belle and the
Devotions with 'Love Games'.
(I'm quite good at remembering winners and UK entries, up to something
like 1988 anyway)

The last time I watched the Eurovision song contestant, it was six
years ago and I was on holiday in Turkey. We watched it with German
commentary, and I seem to remember the German entry was a catchy little
number that earwormed me even more than the Turkish pop music (some of
which was good)

I have to admit we voted frantically for Finland, for the sheer glee of
seeing monsters win Eurovision. I think we might have scared the cats
with the high-fiving and headbanging.

Oh, there were quite a few - Bosnia & Hercegovina stood out especially.
I missed the finals (except for the voting bit), but in the semi-finals,
I rather liked Andorra, Macedonia and Russia. And of course Monaco's
random song in Tahitian.

*grin*

Well - we've put 2 very tired small children to bed :-)
But at least one is VERY HAPPY as we had our own voting party!

My son voted for Finland and was over the moon when they won
My daughter voted for Germany and was only comforted by
the fact that her choice was next to Mummy's (I voted for Latvia)
Daddy voted for ... um ... Denmark I believe (the Twist for Love one)

But we also put in a family vote too - which was Finland :-))

We (the parents) didn't believe it would help and our ghasts
were completely flabbered when they won!!
Heavy Metal ... winning the Eurovision!!!!

Incroyable!

Or amazing ... which seemed to be the favourite adjective of the
evening :-))

We really enjoyed ourselves and were quite impressed with
a) the set-up - very spectacular
b) the songs - most were very good and certainly got us all
singing along
and c) the costumes - wonderfully varied :-)

Finland next year then!

A sufficiently good song of an unusual genre always has a very good
chance at this type of event, especially now that voting is done by
The Great Unwashed rather than a select panel.

For people who like typical Euro-style mainstream pop, there were more
than a dozen plausible entries to choose from [1] - so each country
gets a smaller proportion of the votes. But there was only one death
metal song, so even if only 10% if people watching like death metal,
it's going to get all of those votes, which is a lot.

That, and the fact that it was one of the few that stood out as being
interesting, different and memorable.

I'm disappointed that Bulgaria didn't make it through to the final,
cos I thought they had a good song.

[1] And no, I don't count the UK entry as plausible. The only time
that weirdo should be on TV is advertising the soap powder he names
himself after - and even that might be a bit highbrow for him.

Does anyone think it's time to put together an afp entry for the
Eurovision Song Contest. We could write a typical Eurovision lyric
communally, translate it into as many languages as there are afpers
prepared to enter their national selection processes. We'd then need a
single melody, but each version would have to be done in a completely
different style. We'd then have several hugely different versions of
exactly the same song.

We should be able to at least have a go at entries for the UK, Ireland,
the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, Finland, Norway, France, and Israel.
Ideally we'd also be able to rope in people for Iceland, Belgium, Spain,
Portugal, Italy, Poland and Cyprus.

So does a bad song of an unusual genre, as long as it's unusual enough
and appeals to a sense of humour.

No, Hallelujah, which won in '79, was definitely not hard rock.
